Stop the Bleed — Coming Soon
Someone with severe bleeding can die in under five minutes. Emergency services rarely arrive that fast. Stop the Bleed teaches anyone — no medical background required — the three techniques that keep a person alive until help arrives.
About the program
Stop the Bleed is a program of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. Courses run about 90 minutes: a short presentation followed by hands-on practice. It has been delivered in Canada since 2017, when Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre became the first Canadian hospital to offer it.
What you learn
- Direct pressure — the first and most important intervention
- Wound packing — for bleeding a tourniquet cannot reach
- Tourniquet application — correct placement, adequate tightening, and marking the time
You also learn how to recognize life-threatening bleeding and how to stay safe on scene.
Who it is for
Everyone. Teachers and school staff, workplace safety teams, event and security staff, coaches, industrial and remote worksites, police and corrections officers, community groups, and members of the public. There is no minimum age, though the content includes graphic injury material.
Status
ITLS Northern Lights is in the process of credentialing instructors through the American College of Surgeons so we can offer Stop the Bleed across our service area. We expect to publish dates shortly.
